Hafiz Saeed, four associates put under detention

LAHORE: Police have placed Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), and four other party members, have been put under house arrest in Lahore.

Saeed was taken into custody at headquarters of the JuD that is also religious charity group he heads. Dozens of JuD supporters gathered at Saeed’s home and JuD headquarters.

Three days back, Punjab’s Ministry of Interior had included names of Saeed and four others — Abdullah Ubaid, Zafar Iqbal, Abdur Rehman Abid and Qazi Kashif Niaz — in the Watch List as per UNSC 1267 Sanctions and ordered their preventive detention.

Ubaid, Iqbal, Abid and Niaz were also taken into preventive custody.

Hafiz Saeed – who led the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and has a $10m (£5.8m) US bounty on his head – is blamed for masterminding 2008 Mumbai attack that killed more than 160 people.

He has repeatedly denied involvement in the attack.

Nadeem Awan, Secretary of Information for JuD, told Reuters that government had been under pressure from the United States to take action against Saeed or face sanctions.

“This government has buckled under the pressure,” Awan said
