Lahore: Renowned ghazal singer, Mehdi Hassan being remembered today on his 6th death anniversary.

Mehdi Hassan was born in the family of classical singers in Rajasthan, India on July 18, 1927.

He started his journey of singing, performing in a program, at the age of 8. He came to Pakistan during partition when he was 20 years old, where he started his career as a singer at Radio Pakistan, in 1977.

His first famous ghazal was from movie ‘Firangi’ in 1962. He had his share of popularity not only in Pakistan but all over the world. Anywhere in the world, where fans of ghazals are found, it is impossible not to remember and appreciate the ‘King of ghazal’.He has sung more than 25,000 songs and ghazals throughout his career. “Ik husn ki devi se mujhay pyaar huwa tha” is one of his most popular songs ever.He even had superior command over difficult melodies. The voice that ruled many hearts was of none other than, ‘King of ghazal’ Mehdi Hassan and equivalent of whom is yet to be found.

He was awarded many national level medals and achievements including ‘Hilal-e-Imtiaz’.After reaching the top position in the field of singing, Mehdi Hassan fell severely ill and got many breathing and chest issues. Facing a long ailment, Mehdi Hassan died on June 13, 2012.

His ghazals are still enjoyed by old and new generations.
