Kolkata, India: Joyita Mondal Mahi has become India's first ever transgender judge of a Lok Adalat (People’s Court).

It is a mediation style of dispute settlement, often referred to as the people’s courts. Mondal is working in a district in West Bengal.

Joyita Mondal was born ‘Joyonto’ (male) in a traditional hindu family in Kolkata, West Bengal.

She was relentlessly bullied at school and faced discrimination when she was a kid. She dropped out of school, slept at a bus stand, and begged on the streets, before leaving Kolkatta and moving to a small town of Islampur in Uttar Dinajpur district in 2009.

Over the next seven years she built her own organisation 'Dinajpur Notun Alo' (Dinajpur new light) which till date has worked with 2,200 trans-genders in the region.

The 29-year-old was appointed India’s first transgender judge of a Lok Adalat in Bengal.

Mondal told The Hindustan Times. ‘In most of the cases, I suggested negotiation which the litigants found acceptable.’ Mondal has been a long-term advocate for LGBTI issues. But said she was chosen to be a Lok Adalat because she was a social worker.

Two years ago, Mondal setup a home for elderly people living with HIV and specialized welfare committees. It was this work that caught the attention of district administration.
