KARACHI: The Sindh Government on Wednesday declared a one-day state mourning for Governor Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui who passed away at a Karachi hospital. He was 78.

According to a spokesman of Governor House, Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui complained of severe chest pain after which he was rushed to South City Hospital.

Ever since taking oath as the the 31st Governor of Sindh on November 11, the former chief justice remained unwell.

In a press statement, the Sindh government said that it would observe a day of mourning on Thursday.

Separately, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Mamnoon Hussain have expressed profound grief over the demise of the governor.

Sharif said Siddiqui’s services will be remembered for the supremacy of the law and the constitution.

He said Siddiqui had never compromised over principles and always confronted non-democratic characters.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also expressed grief over death of the governor.

“PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expresses grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Governor Sindh Saeed U Zaman Sidiqi,” the party’s media cell said in a statement.

Siddiqui was the Chief Justice of Pakistan when the 1999 military coup was staged by General Pervez Musharraf.

He refused to take a new oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) saying that: “Taking an oath under the PCO, in my opinion, will be a deviation from the oath I had taken to defend the constitution of 1973”.
