WhatsApp's new feature lets users allow switching to video from voice calls
WhatsApp's new feature lets users allow switching to video from voice calls
Published at: 7 month(s) ago

California, United States: The Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that lets you switch to video call from ongoing voice call in just one tap. The new feature could be a very interesting one considering it lets you switch to video call without the need of cutting the voice call first.

The new WhatsApp feature is currently limited to beta users on Android, and can be expected to rolled out broadly to everyone soon. Android users who are part of WhatsApp's beta programme will get the one button switch feature to switch from voice to video calls. Currently, WhatsApp for Android users running version 2.18.4 will be able to see video call switch button. The new button shows up towards the bottom of the voice call screen.

It's worth noting that the one switch button will work only when both the called and receiver are running the latest WhatsApp version. In case, one of the two are on the old version then the feature won't work. When both parties are running the latest version, the one switch button will show on the bottom screen and on tapping, it will show a prompt with "Requesting to switch to video call" pop-up message.

For those unaware, WhatsApp has been working on the one tap switch button for months, and was first spotted in April 2017. The feature was reportedly rolled out for a brief period before being pulled again. In October, the WhatsApp switch button showed to select users but the feature was yet again disabled.
